A monster's Challenge Rating (CR) estimates how dangerous it is for a party of four characters of the matching level to fight it.

CR also determines a monster's Proficiency Bonus and, for monsters with spellcasting, the save DC of their spells.

Some player features key off a maximum Challenge Rating, limiting which monsters a character can affect, summon, or transform into.
