Overview

A background is what your character did before becoming an adventurer. Each background in Onyx lists its skill and tool proficiencies, languages, starting equipment and feature. Backgrounds from the 2024 Player’s Handbook also give ability score increases and an origin feat.

When to use it

Choose a background once you know your class, and look for skills the class doesn’t already give you. Setting books add backgrounds tied to one place, like Baldur’s Gate or Ravnica, so ask your DM which books your table uses.
